I've just become aware of a grant for unpublished writers. Obviously, since I don't have a track record to go on, I can't send a CV or anything like that. How do I write that letter of intent?

Hi Travis. Thanks for writing. First, see if you even need a CV. In the case of a grant for unpublished writers, IF you need a CV, then think of things like: where you studied, who you studied with, what workshops you attended, if any at all (like Bread Loaf, places like that), etc. I wouldn't worry. As for the letter, keep it short and sweet. Don't whine about how you need money or tell them how much your grandma loves your stories. Just stick to facts---I would like you to consider me for this grant...blahblahblah...I am an emerging writer and the grant would give me the opportunity to....etc. If you have a specific project in mind, such as a book of short stories, then mention that. You'll be fine...they will mostly go on whether or not they liked your work.

Good luck! I hope you get it.

Hi Mira,
I have appreciated your blog for a long time - thank you for this resource! I was reading over the FAQ for the Thanatopolis project, and the section on funding says "The I-Park Selection Committee will determine the level of funding available on a project by project
basis. As part of your project proposal, you are asked to address the issue of funding. At this time, it is expected that I-Park will be offering materials and equipment reimbursements in the range of $500 – $3,000 per project. Generally, the cost of labor to install the piece will not be reimbursable." I was wondering where the $2,000 creative fee was mentioned, or if there had been a change in the funding (the FAQ does say it was updated a month or so after it was posted.) Thanks!

Hi Judith...as far as your I-Park questions go, contact the person who hopefully has the answers:

I don't really know any more than what I posted.

By the way, I love your work. I checked out your site.

Welcome to Mira's List

This blog provides information on upcoming grants, fellowships and residencies for artists, writers, composers, and media artists. It is for serious professionals only, from emerging to mid-career to established. I also publish information for graduate students from time to time. However, I do not publish information on exhibition or publishing opportunities, nor do I advertise artist retreats and workshops that charge money. At least that is my current policy. For more info on where to exhibit or publish, please see my links section which I try to periodically update. I sift through hundreds of search engines and websites to find opportunities for YOU dear artist. In return, I ask you to pass the information along to those who need it. Also, since this is a free blog, I don't always have the time to weed carefully through everything. If you find a grant or website or residency that is not up-to-date, is dodgy in some way, or is no longer in existence, please let me know! Also, if you stay somewhere at one of the residencies I suggest and have a good experience, I want that feedback too. Please check my FAQs at the top right side bar if you have questions before starting your search. Best wishes and happy hunting!
