P.S. BE A HORSE, NOT A TINY FEARFUL THING

P.S. You know, I also get some whiny letters too. And to those, I say: we all have a choice. We can choose to be victims and get really cynical and bitter about our disappointments, our illnesses, our losses and rejections in life. We can blame our friends, the government, grant foundations, literary magazines, art dealers, our mothers and fathers, our husbands and wives or our crying babies. Or we can be brave, emotionally present and creative. Do you want to be a small, snarling fearful creature or do you want to be a fierce and beautiful thoroughbred, who, for every obstacle placed in your path, jumps over it with intention and joy? Dudes, I'd choose the horse if I were you.

Great advice. One of my intentions for the new year is to express more gratitude for the blessings in my life. Gratitude implies positive energy and personal responsibility. Here's to a fearless 2010.

P.S. Many thanks for the time and effort you dedicate to this blog. It's truly a valuable (and valued) service.

A horse is always preferable! I wrote about this on my blog that we need to focus on artists thriving instead of artist starving. Best.

Thank you, Mira. You are such an inspiration. I saw your art work at the Northampton library a few years ago. It was so beautiful.

Love this. I am a playwright. I write great plays. I have not had a show on the boards, in costume, under lights for twenty-five years. I am a patient man. I know the world of theater needs time to catch up with me and my characters. Rejection is a fact of life for any writer. Failure is not an option in my world...

A great reminder. It can be tempting to blame things outside of ourselves when we face the challenges of being an artist. But creation takes hope and faith. Thanks for your blog!!

After too many people around me for a much fun holiday, I am stuffy headed with a clowded mind and a cold and the thoughts of what is ahead of me with all my artistic intentions is overwhelming. After 25 years of nonstop creation I am on the fence of going forward or falling off. Have I depleated the well? I will have to catch up to that horse and mount it, then symbiotically meld. thanks for the words of wisdom . Mad Anne

Welcome to Mira's List

This blog provides information on upcoming grants, fellowships and residencies for artists, writers, composers, and media artists. It is for serious professionals only, from emerging to mid-career to established. I also publish information for graduate students from time to time. However, I do not publish information on exhibition or publishing opportunities, nor do I advertise artist retreats and workshops that charge money. At least that is my current policy. For more info on where to exhibit or publish, please see my links section which I try to periodically update. I sift through hundreds of search engines and websites to find opportunities for YOU dear artist. In return, I ask you to pass the information along to those who need it. Also, since this is a free blog, I don't always have the time to weed carefully through everything. If you find a grant or website or residency that is not up-to-date, is dodgy in some way, or is no longer in existence, please let me know! Also, if you stay somewhere at one of the residencies I suggest and have a good experience, I want that feedback too. Please check my FAQs at the top right side bar if you have questions before starting your search. Best wishes and happy hunting!
