CALLING ALL ARTISTS, WRITERS, COMPOSERS, MUSICIANS, DANCERS, etc.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT: So I have been getting wonderful messages from people all over the world, thanking me for this blog, people from as far away as Ghana, Hungary, Sweden, and Brazil. I know I need to set up a poll to find out where the heck you guys are finding this site but until I do that, I kind of prefer the more personal approach, which is to: A. ask you how you found this blog and B: ask you to leave a comment below about what it is in particular you are looking for (a grant to travel to West Africa, for instance, or you are an emerging painter looking for a fellowship to study in Italy for a year or you are a mid-career writer who wants to just write poetry for a month, or you are a composer who just lost his job and needs emergency funding, etc.). I will read everything I get and store it into my wee brain for future postings.

As most of you know, I do this for free and am currently unemployed (let's hope I get a big advance on my book...soon to be sent out to publishers!) so I can't promise immediate action on your requests but anything you tell me will help shape the evolution of this blog so I can serve you better. And knowing where you are all finding me will help me in the future when I try to actually sit down and make an effort to be visible on search engines. I'm just trying to keep up with posting right now. Anyway, I am hoping that down the road, perhaps MFA programs or low-residency programs will want to advertise on my site so that can help it keep going. And I promise I will never put any flashing annoying pop-up ads on it, ever! That is one of the reasons I created this site. I cannot stand those hard-to-navigate-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink flashy arts websites that not only are impossible to read but they also charge money. I never want to charge for this site if I can help it. So please, if you have a second, tell me where you found me in a brief message and let me know if you are looking for anything in particular. Here at Mira's List, we live to serve. Well. We also live for art, dogs, music, food, graphic novels, baby animals, love, dreams, and the luminous sea. Cheers y'all. Mira

Mira, I found your blog via AROHO's website. I'm not sure what grants I'm looking for other than those that can support playwrights (esp.) or screenwriters. I'd love a grant that would get me to the Library of Congress for some research I'm doing. Mostly, I've found your site very educational and demystifying about grants. The book you recommended by Ellen Liberatori is the best I've read!

Hi Mira,

Can't remember how I stumbled upon your blog but I've been enjoying it. I like in the UK.

I'd like to learn more about international funding that supports writers/poets (who live outside of the US) for things like travel. I also like reading about the residencies that are on offer but if there are any that include all the luxuries, such as travel, meals and bed, that would be just fantastic.

Thanks for all your hard work and generosity of spirit.
Ivy

Mira,

Thanks for this terrific blog! I heard about it at the AROHO panel at AWP this year. I live in New York, but am moving to Colorado next summer after grad school.

I'm interested in anything and everything related to writing creative nonfiction, as well as poetry, since I'm developing a nonprofit poetry project with national scope.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Mira,
I live in Western, MA and heard about your site through an artist friend.
I'm interested simply in seeing what is out there for artists...no specific request.
Thank you for all the information you are sharing.

I think I found a link to your site on C-Monster.

I found you through an email you sent to the Artist Foundation Listserv. I supply information to 180 artists at the Western Avenue Studios complex in Lowell, MA . . . and am constantly on the lookout for opportunities to forward to the artists, for our gallery or for the non-profit we just formed to buy the building.

I deeply appreciate the work that you put into this endeavor.

I recently found your blog through a posting to the College Art Association site. I'm an art historian and a printmaker living in the midwest, so I'm looking for both research and artist grants, travel funding, etc. Thank you so much for your amazing work!

Hello Mira,
I was at the conference in Boston at the beginning of April and was at your workshop. Thanks so much for the info. I am now applying for a residencey in Italy and for a small grant. I've never received a grant before and have been a painter since 1984. Can you recommend anything that I should apply for?

Hey -

I found you by Googling something to do with art opportunities; I don't recall the specific search terms I used.

My profile is similar to Anonymous (May 7) - I'm a painter and writer/scholar in the north woods (Marquette, Michigan) looking for artist and research grants, travel and residency funding, and especially grants to help me deal with the isolation here - exhibition opportunities within a day's drive, and financial support for practical stuff - like shipping work to places further afield.

Thanks for your work.

hi mira,
first, i want to thank -you for this wonderful blog. it is refreshing to see someone so generous in the sharing of very helpful information. i believe i found your site by just doing a general grant and residency search. i, in turn have passed it on to many of my artists friends. i am a los angeles painter. i think it would be a real asset if people who have successfully received grants and or residencies etc., could post that info. it would be nice to hear some success stories. also it would also be nice to hear from the people who make the judgement calls on these apllications, what kind of criteria they use for this etc.(as you posted on the fulbright scholarship award) keep up the good work.

Dear Mira,

I heard about your blog through a friend when I told her I was interested in good sources for potential arts funding.

I am currently looking for funding for me, as an American (New Mexico)-based artist to continue to collaborate with artists I've been collaborating with abroad, particularly from the UK. Any funding geared towards international collaboration would be much appreciated.

I am also working on place-based art education for kids. Funding for nature, and place-based art ed. would be helpful as well.

Cheers for your commitment to this blog site and everything you offer to all of us through this medium. Much appreciated!

Cheers!

Hi!

I'm sorry I can't remember how I found this blog, but I'm happy I did. It's very informative.

I'm a student of performance studies who dabbles in creative writing and performance art. I've found the site because of my interest in writer-in-residence programs, but I am likely to use whatever information you have for grants and fellowships.

Good luck with your book, and thanks for all your work on the site. It really is helpful.

And it's true, flashy sites suck.

I found you on the CAA website, I can't remember under what heading though.
I'm a photographer, and at the moment, I'm looking for information of MFA programs and funding opportunities for said MFA. Thank you so much for keeping this blog going.

Hi Mira- thank you for your generous nature. I found your blog through a general search for art residencies. I am a painter living upstate NY who has suddenly found the horizon wide open...no longer as responsible for kids, father-in-law or husband I am now free to paint longer hours and travel on or off season. In my dreams, I am applying for a residency that I don't have to pay for, and grants to help out with painting/publishing projects. Thank you and good luck to you!

First of all, thank you for all your hard work!

I actually don't remember how did I find your site, but someone mentioned here he found you through C-Monster, and I visit that site as well, so it may be my source too.

And about specific requests – I'm looking for opportunities in Graphic Design, wherever.

Thanks again! :)

Hi Mira. I heard you speak at TransCultural in Boston. I love this blog, and am currently seeking grant opportunities (other than NYFA and Leighter) for international travel opportunities, because at the conference I was invited to Haslla Artworld Sculpture Symposium in August in Korea.

I started a Facebook group here:

and have given your site a great review.

Thanks for the work you do!

Mira,
You are surely the Writing Angel!

I found you via a google alert that I've made several attempts to "get right". (One day I'll write a book called "I'll know what I want when I can find it on Google" :) I also recently found AROHO on Google and thought it was such a wonderful labor of love for women writers.

Thank you for your generous heart. I am shifting in my life and answering my true calling to write. I've been researching grants and fellowships that would allow me to give my heart over to it. I've made some headway in gathering resources to tap, but your list made is what I've been looking for. I'd also be interested Grants/fellowships for African American women writers.

I loved your story of how you got your start...we are kindred spirits! (Leap and the Net will Appear kind of girls!)

Thank you for this wonderful gift!

Dear Mira,

I found your blog while I was researching on fellowship in U.S.
I am a young italian writer.

I am looking for fully-paid fellowship for international writers in the area of New York.
I published enough now about art and photography and travel (in Italian) and I hope to find soon my chance to move in the U.S.

Thank you so much for everything you are doing, I think it is very generous of you.

Your blog is well organised and most importantly it is very well intended and generous. That shows you are a nice person on top of obviously being smart and well educated, and that is a rare combination these days... ;-)

Best to you and thanks.

Hello Mira,
I found your site through a google search. I'm looking for seed grants to help start a local ballet company in my state. The company will have 3 goals: Performance, education, and community touring.

Hi AtHome Dad---just wanted you to know that I posted something about your question. I don't do non-profit research at the moment. Sorry! You still might want to read my new post.
best,
Mira

Welcome to Mira's List

This blog provides information on upcoming grants, fellowships and residencies for artists, writers, composers, and media artists. It is for serious professionals only, from emerging to mid-career to established. I also publish information for graduate students from time to time. However, I do not publish information on exhibition or publishing opportunities, nor do I advertise artist retreats and workshops that charge money. At least that is my current policy. For more info on where to exhibit or publish, please see my links section which I try to periodically update. I sift through hundreds of search engines and websites to find opportunities for YOU dear artist. In return, I ask you to pass the information along to those who need it. Also, since this is a free blog, I don't always have the time to weed carefully through everything. If you find a grant or website or residency that is not up-to-date, is dodgy in some way, or is no longer in existence, please let me know! Also, if you stay somewhere at one of the residencies I suggest and have a good experience, I want that feedback too. Please check my FAQs at the top right side bar if you have questions before starting your search. Best wishes and happy hunting!
