The D. H. Lawrence Fellowship is awarded to an emerging writer of fiction or poetry with one book in print or at press. The D. H. Lawrence Fellow will receive tuition remission, lodging at the Sagebrush Inn or Comfort Suites, and two meals a day (breakfast and lunch). In return, the Fellow contributes to the Taos Summer Writer's Conference activities and gives a formal reading. Fellowships with a stipend of $4,200 per month support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to scholars and general audiences in the humanities. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, and other scholarly tools. Fellowships support continuous full-time work for a period of six to twelve months. A number of other grants are also available. The Antarctic Artists & Writers Program considers requests from particularly well qualified writers, historians, artists, or others in the liberal arts to work in Antarctica. Although the Foundation does not award funds, selected applicants are provided with polar clothing on loan, travel between New Zealand or southern South America and Antarctica, and room and board and logistics in Antarctica. The Foundation may provide round-trip economy air travel between a U.S. airport and New Zealand or South America. Applicants may seek supplemental funds from additional sources, including other federal agencies. Candidates must be well established and working full-time in their fields and have a means of presenting their work to the public. Applications accepted May 1 through June 1. Five Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowships of $15,000 each are given annually to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in English or creative writing programs who will not have received an M.A. or M.F.A. degree as of December 31 of the year of the award. Program directors and department chairs in the U.S. should submit nominations on an official application form from Poetry. Applications must be postmarked during the month of March. In addition, Poetry Magazine administers the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize of $100,000 for outstanding poetic achievement, as well as eight Poetry Magazine Awards, ranging from $500 to $3,000, for poetry published in the magazine during the previous year.
