ARTIST RESIDENCIES: ASK ME

I will be heading off this Thursday, April 2nd to the Transcultural Exchange Conference on Opportunities in the Arts in Boston. I'll be back in my office on Monday the 6th. If you have any burning questions about international residencies (as well as Fulbright grants), how to get them, how to fund them, specific places you'd like to know more about, etc., please click on "comments" below this posting and leave a question. That way, when I go to the conference, I can try to track down your answers while I'm there. So ask away! I'll do my best to try and find answers to your questions and will get back to you after the conference.

Hi, Mira. Thank you for asking!

I'm interested in Latin America: Central, South, and the Caribbean. Also Spain.

My husband's a visual artist and I'm a poet, and we'd prefer to travel together naturally. I've noticed a wide variance of flexibility regarding this issue; that some places welcome partners, some require them to apply separately, some do not accommodate them at all, some make no mention...Where are some places that are friendly to artist couples? What about applying as collaborators, any tips you can find in that direction?

Many thanks!

Greetings and thanks for writing...I left a comment a couple days ago in response to your similar question on my Q and A Forum so check that out. In the meantime, I'll sniff around for you at the conference and post everything I find when I get back. So check back in after the 6th!
best wishes, m.

This site is a wonderful resource! I have passed it on to many friends.
I would like to add to the previous comment and ask about residencies for visual artists that allow the artist to attend with spouse and children. I know that the American Academy in Rome offers such an option, and I am curious to know if you are aware of others....
Thank you!

Hi Melissa. Thanks for writing! Great question. Actually, most of the Italian residencies let spouses come. There is one in Bellagio, Italy that allows spouses and another, the Bogliasco one near Genoa that I think does. Click on the label to the right that says "Italy" and you will get that posting with the website info. The best thing to do though is to decide where you want to go, then go to Res Artis or Trans Artists (see links under residency section on sidebar) and check about that issue with the places you pick to apply to. I'll tell you right now though, most places in the US do not allow spouses and your partner has to apply separately, unless you are collaborating on something. European residencies are more open to families coming. I hope that helps! Best, Mira

Welcome to Mira's List

This blog provides information on upcoming grants, fellowships and residencies for artists, writers, composers, and media artists. It is for serious professionals only, from emerging to mid-career to established. I also publish information for graduate students from time to time. However, I do not publish information on exhibition or publishing opportunities, nor do I advertise artist retreats and workshops that charge money. At least that is my current policy. For more info on where to exhibit or publish, please see my links section which I try to periodically update. I sift through hundreds of search engines and websites to find opportunities for YOU dear artist. In return, I ask you to pass the information along to those who need it. Also, since this is a free blog, I don't always have the time to weed carefully through everything. If you find a grant or website or residency that is not up-to-date, is dodgy in some way, or is no longer in existence, please let me know! Also, if you stay somewhere at one of the residencies I suggest and have a good experience, I want that feedback too. Please check my FAQs at the top right side bar if you have questions before starting your search. Best wishes and happy hunting!
